On Sunday, March 20, 2011, the Claremont community showed its support for the American Red Cross at the second annual Run for the Red.  The Claremont Chapter of the American Red Cross would like to extend its wholehearted thanks to everyone who made Run for the Red possible: our financial donors. business partners, runners and walkers, and the race volunteers. All of these people came together to create an event that was truly inspiring.

The races began at 8:00 AM and culminated with awards ceremonies and a health and fitness fair. Despite the sporadic rain, 650 runners turned out for the race, helping raise more than $26,000 for the Red Cross.

Nominally a community event  that offered 1K, 5K, and 10K run/walks through the Claremont Colleges, it became much more than that.  The most striking aspect of the event was the enthusiasm and energy level of everyone there, this despite less than perfect weather.  Volunteers and participants alike shared the feeling that something special was going on.   Many participants inquired about opportunities to volunteer at the Red Cross. They had been inspired by the energy level they saw in the race volunteers and the importance of the work that the Red Cross does.

Events such as the Run for the Red are important in two ways:  First, the fundraising aspect of the event is the reason for having an event like this.  The wonderful by-product of this is the second point: the coming together of hundreds of people who want to give back to their community and the world fosters a sense of altruism not seen in most other settings.  A sense of global community was tangible in the attitude of all present at the Run for the Red.

One participant in particular embodied this sense of giving back. Five year-old Riley Fass came to her parents with the desire to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami after learning of the destruction in Japan and being moved by what she saw. Already an entrant in the 1K run, her empathy moved her to do more: raise money by soliciting donations for her participation. Within 24 hours of pledging to raise $300 for her race, Riley had surpassed that goal and knew that she needed to keep trying to raise more. As of now, Riley has raised close to $3,000, with a goal of $5,000 in sight.  Donations can be made at www.active.com/donate/ rileyforjapan.  Riley’s enthusiasm and charity at such a young age embody the spirit of this event and is a source of inspiration for the rest of the community.

Again, our profound thanks from all of us at the Claremont Chapter.  See you next year!
