Becoming a Volunteer
Welcome to the American Red Cross. Each year over one million Americans serve as Red Cross volunteers serving local community needs — helping people in emergencies, providing half the nation's blood supply, teaching first aid and CPR courses, delivering emergency messages to members of the military, organizing programs for the elderly, for the youth…
Red Cross volunteers work directly with people, serve on boards of directors, serve as managers, advisors, and provide behind the scenes support.
Be a Red Cross volunteer! Helping others feels good, and helps you feel good about yourself. The Claremont Chapter of the American Red Cross can work with you to provide rewarding experiences, opportunities to utilize your talents, or provide training to help you serve your community.
Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to more than 70,000 disasters, both natural and man-made. As you watch disaster relief efforts unfold, you may wonder how the Red Cross recruits and trains volunteers. Chapters all over the country offer Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) System training to equip volunteers with the proper training and knowledge to prepare them for deployment when disaster strikes. During times of large scale disasters and devastation there are also many individuals who step forward, eager to do whatever they can to help. When these spontaneous volunteers offer their assistance, we often put their talents to use on-site and behind the scenes after orienting them to Red Cross services and determining how they may best help those affected by the disaster. If you are interested in volunteering with the Red Cross, please take the first steps by downloading and completing the Claremont Red Cross Volunteer Application Forms and then check out our new online Introduction to Disaster Services Course to learn more about the lifesaving services we provide.
Additional Disaster Services classes are offered at neighboring Chapters: A current list may be viewed by clicking here.

The Chapter now requires that its disaster volunteers be members of the Disaster Services Human Resources ("DSHR") system. Being part of DSHR will allow you to deploy to national level disasters but does not obligate you to do so -- the Chapter controls that availability -- and it does allow us to accurately track your training and disaster service. The National Headquarters policy is also to require background checks for all DSHR members. That initiation form is also included but need not be completed until you are formally entered into the system. Please click to download Disaster

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 — The American Red Cross has mobilized thousands of volunteers to respond in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which completely devastated parts of Louisiana and left at least 55 people dead.
The Red Cross plans to send close to 2,000 volunteers in the area to begin the initial response in the next few days.
“Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of the American Red Cross, and we are calling on them now by the thousands to help support relief efforts in Louisiana and other states after Katrina,” said Pat McCrummen, American Red Cross disaster spokesperson. “We are looking at a long term, very significant response to this storm.”
The Red Cross is mobilizing every available resource from across the country including thousands of staff and volunteers to respond to this storm. Red Cross volunteers and donors are neighbors helping neighbors.
Volunteers are already on the ground staffing shelters for tens of thousands of people in five states—Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas.
The Red Cross is launching the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural domestic disaster, in part because the extent of the damage is so widespread over a large geographical area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin including sending nearly 1,900 staff and volunteers into the field in the next few days, and sending more than 250 Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) out to provide food and water to affected residents.

About The American Red Cross
American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to more than 67,000 disasters, including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters.
The Good News Is
That We Can Help
Although the American Red Cross is not a government agency, its authority to
provide disaster relief was formalized when, in 1905, the Red Cross was
chartered by Congress to "carry on a system of national and international
relief in time of peace and apply the same in mitigating the sufferings caused
by pestilence, famine, fire, floods, and other great national calamities, and to
devise and carry on measures for preventing the same." The Charter is not
only a grant of power, but also an imposition of duties and obligations to the
nation, to disaster victims, and to the people who generously support its work
with their donations.
Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and mental health services to address basic human needs. In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families affected by disaster to enable them to resume their normal daily activities independently.
The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.
